How to change your server name, password and basic settings Print

This article explains how to change your server name, password and other basic settings from the PlayNHost Game Panel.

1. Log in to the Game Panel

  1. Go to https://panel.playnhost.com.
  2. Log in with your panel account, or use the Game Panel button from the Client Area at https://playnhost.com/billing.
  3. Select the server you want to configure.

2. Find the configuration area

The exact layout can vary by game, but you will usually find settings in one of these places:

  • A menu called Configuration, Settings or Startup.
  • Game configuration files in the File Manager (for example server.cfg, GameUserSettings.ini, server.properties or similar).

If your panel has a dedicated settings page for your game, it will show common options in a form you can edit. Otherwise, you can edit the config file directly.

3. Change your server name

  • Open the configuration page or config file for your game:
    • For many games, look for a field or line named Server Name, Hostname, ServerTitle or similar.
    • For Minecraft, the name shown in the server list is usually set in server.properties on the line motd=....
  • Replace the existing name with the one you want players to see in the server browser.
  • Save the changes:
    • Click Save on the settings page, or
    • Click Save in the file editor if you edited a config file.

4. Set or change your server password

  • In the same configuration area or config file, look for a setting such as:
    • ServerPassword
    • password
    • server_pass
  • Enter the password you want players to use when joining.
  • To remove a password, clear the value or set it to blank, depending on the game’s format.
  • Save your changes.

Tip: Use a password that is easy for your friends or community to remember but not something you use for your personal accounts.

5. Other useful basic settings

While you are editing your config, you may also see options like:

  • Max Players / Player Slots – how many players can join at once (subject to your plan limits).
  • Server Description – text shown in the server browser.
  • PvP / PvE or difficulty options – gameplay rules, depending on the game.
  • Map / World / Seed – which map or world to load.

Only change settings you understand. If you are not sure what a field does, look it up for your specific game or ask support before changing it.

6. Restart your server to apply changes

  1. After saving your settings or config file, go back to the server dashboard.
  2. Click Restart (or Stop then Start) so the new settings are loaded.
  3. Wait for the server to fully start, then:
    • Check the game’s server browser to see your new name/description.
    • Join using the new password if you set one.

7. If something goes wrong

  • Server won’t start after changing settings
Re-open the config file and look for obvious typos (missing quotes, wrong values). If you made a backup of the file before editing, restore it and try again.
  • New name or password doesn’t show
Make sure you saved the file and fully restarted the server, not just stopped and started your game client.

If you are unsure which setting to change for your specific game, please open a ticket from the Support → Submit a Ticket section and include your game name and server IP/port.
